Personal Style In 2021!
WEDNESDAy, January 27, 2021
The search is over & this is where you can begin.
Everyone says style is subjective, which is totally true! But today’s subject, will help you find your key style, or at least guide you into the right direction. As we get into the new year & try to navigate ourselves through the year that should not be named (2020), you may be thinking now is a great time as ever to switch up your style! You might even want to minimize your wardrobe & really sort through the clothes you don’t wear anymore. Today’s post is just what you need!
Today I’m going to help you try to find your personal style! Style is a journey that feels like the longest car ride ever. It sometimes starts at an early age, or after a frustrating time where you have an epiphany & realize it’s time to change it up! But where do you start & how do you get from fashion don’t to style icon? I’ve got 5 quick tips that will get you right on track!
Here’s How To Find Your Personal Style In 2021!
Sort Through Your Closet & See What You’re Workin’ With
When wanting to figure out or identify your personal style, start with what you got! Go through your current closet & sort through the items you LIKE & the ones you DON’T LIKE. When sorting, keep note of the things you LIKE & what those things have in common.
Is there a certain colour you own a lot of?
Do you have a ton more Hoodies than Crewnecks?
And why did you gravitate towards hoodies in the first place?
Are Hoodies what you feel most confident or comfortable in?
Make a mental note of these things to help figure out your style! Maybe you’re more into athleisure wear than you thought? Or maybe you can be more into streetwear! Or maybe Hoodies aren’t you anymore & you need to change up your style? Sorting through your current closet will help & is a great first step!
TIP: When sorting, take into consideration the BRANDS you have too! Maybe you wear a lot of Tommy Hilfiger because you feel most comfortable in that & the fit fits you nicely. Or maybe you feel your best in your Nike tracksuit! This will also help, so when you determine your style, you can either start with a brand you like, or steer clear from a brand you’re trying to switch up / update your style.
Learn What Looks Best On Your Body Type
Once you’ve sorted through your closet & looked through the items you like, or noticed a pattern in what style you gravitate to, find out what looks best on you! What compliments you. What makes you feel your best, but also makes you feel confident! If you have a more Athletic Build (Tall, broad shoulders, thicker quads), you might like a fitted look, but also some shirts might be too tight on your shoulders. Or you might want to rock skinny jeans, but they might feel uncomfortable with bigger quads, or might rip more often. Seeing what compliments your body best, or makes you feel comfortable & confident is a major 🔑 to finding your style!
REMINDER: Clothes are meant for everyone. The point of this is not to shame, but to share that everyone has different body types. And when dressing, you should feel your best, be comfortable, but also confident with what you’re wearing. Finding out what compliments your body type can be a real game changer to determining your style! Especially if you were used to wearing clothes that DIDN’T compliment you.
Start With Buying The Essentials / Naturals / Basics
Now that you’ve figured out what you like, what compliments your body type & what you gravitate towards,
it’s time to buy & try on! When shopping & trying to define your style, I suggest you start with Basics, or Wardrobe Staples. There are fashion Staples everyone should own, that compliment a lot of people & also pair great with a variety of different pieces / styles. Basics are anything from Jeans, a plain Hoodie, a white & black tee, a flannel, or even a turtleneck. These are basic items, but Staples to own! When trying to branch out a little, or change up / experiment more with your style, small details changes, rather than big, colourful one ofs, or even some trends, will work MUCH BETTER than trying to do a 180* style change or even a 360*!
TIP: Stay clear of trends, until you have enough Staples, or until a trend because a Staples.
Example: In recent years, CARGOS were a big trend, but only a few people wore them/ brands had them.
Now, with increased popularity, CARGOS are seen as a staple, as you can style them with a variety of different pieces. Having a staple you can style with different pieces you already own, or want to own later on, is a
BIG WIN & also makes you look a lot more style conscious.
Find Sources Of Inspiration
This one probably comes without saying, but having some Fit Inspo can be super helpful in finding out your style, or what style relm you want to get into. If you’ve never really been into style & now find yourself loving comfy fashion trends, you might feel like you want to get into Streetwear. Finding different online sources that show off different streetwear wear-ers, can really help inspire you & give you ideas for styling yourself! Though it’s obvious Instagram is a great online source for finding Fit Inspo, you can search on other websites like Pinterest, Tumblr - even TikTok! TikTok is visually great for style inspo & even giving you tips on how to pair different items / outfits together. Other older, yet great sources would be Magazines, or even certain Shows or Movies. If you’re into Streetwear, but more 90’s style, old 90’s films or tv shows are great inspo for that!
TIP: Looking for inspo on how to dress? How about taking a walk in your city! Location / Environment inspo is a great source for inspiration as well, because different cities / locations will dress different than others, but it gives you a great opportunity to see what’s trendy in your area, or will give you insight what isn’t cool in your area
as well!
Have A “STYLE ICON” To Look Up To For STYLE INSPO
This one might SEEM OBVIOUS, but is also a great way to find out your style, as well as find out about other brands, or dupes to cop for yourself! Let’s say your more of an Athletic build & like Odell Beckham JR. He has great style & seeing how he pairs some outfits, or seeing what he wears will give you ideas on how to pair fits that you own, or give you great inspo for purchasing things in store, or online. If you’re into Tyler The Creator’s style, you can follow him & see how he pairs different outfits together, or even see if he shares some of his inspo. It’s not only a great way to get inspired, but as they update their lives & their feed, you’re always getting ideas.
TIP: Online, try to follow accounts that share many photos or your style icon, or follow inspiration accounts that share multiple peoples outfits. This is a great way to constantly see how people are dressing, whats trendy (If that’s what you’re into) & always get inspiration!
And there you have it! Those are my 5 quick tips to find your personal style this year! Now these aren’t all requirements or easy fixes, but I hope these do help you find out your style, or find out how you like to dress to feel your most confident self!
