5 Tips To Help Build
Your Capsule Wardrobe
Here’s my tips to help build your new, essentials closet! And no, I don’t mean FOG! This will be your next go-to pieces!
When a new year begins, society often influences us to evaluate our current life & lifestyle. Most people sit down & create new years resolutions, while other might start cleaning out clutter from their life, or even start new hobbies or habits. But I find there’s always someone looking to re-evaluate their current style & unsure exactly how to go about it. If that person’s you, i’ve got just the post for you.
As sustainability becomes the topic of conversation more & more, suggestions of sticking to a capsule wardrobe have been advice a lot of fashion enthusiasts (like myself) have given. If you’re unfamiliar with what a capsule wardrobe IS, I’ll do my best to break it down for you below:
Fashion enthusiasts & experts have stated that having these collection of classic pieces that don’t go out of style & are predominately neutral colours, not only saves you time while getting dressed & creating outfits, but it’s a way to get more wear out of your closet, even while seemingly having less.
Today, i’m going to share my tips on how to build a capsule wardrobe for 2023, as well as key items to shop for a capsule wardrobe!
How To Go About Building Your New Capsule Wardrobe :
Do An Audit Of Your Current Closet
When looking to start building a Capsule Wardrobe, start by assessing what you already own. Look to see if there’s capsule pieces you might already own, or to see what you might need to purchase. Maybe you have a lot of tees, but they’re all graphic tees, or striped tees. Maybe you have a couple black hoodies, but they’re all have graphics on them, or are too oversized on you. Go thoroughly through your closet to see the items you currently own, and can build off of, instead of feeling like you need to start from scratch.
Evaluate Your Current Lifestyle & Where You Typically Dress To Go Out
Once you’ve gone through your current closet & have picked out items you are no longer keeping, take some time to evaluate your lifestyle to truly see what you wear & what your style is when you might go out to. If you tend to be more active, maybe you build your Capsule Wardrobe on more activewear pieces, instead of businesswear pieces. If you have an office job, maybe you gravitate to more businesswear or business casual items. If you are looking to fill your closet with more nightlife outfits (Maybe out to more fancier dinners, formal events, etc…), that’s how you can start to determine what to shop for.
Shop For Basics / Essentials or Staple Pieces
When going out to shop & build your Capsule Wardrobe, look to shop for BASICS / ESSENTIALS ONLY!!! With that in mind, you’re not shopping for Graphic Tee, Fun Bomber Jackets, Trendy Hoodies - you’re looking for STAPLE ITEMS! For a clarification I’ve put together a list of items to help you build & lean on, to help compile a list of what you can look for to help build your own capsule wardrobe.
For reference though, you’re going to be looking for specific items, such as:
- A plain White & Black tee
- A solid grey hoodie
- A denim Jakcet
- Lightwash or Black Denim Jeans
Items like that will help you build staple items that you can consistently use to style & wear daily.
When Shopping, Stick To Muted Colours, aka NEUTRALS!
This one is 🔑 to building a Capsule Wardrobe & truly having staples in your closet to build. This does mean plain colours like Whites, Blacks, Greys, Beige, or even Cream colours. With that being said, stay away from TRENDY ITEMS AND COLOURS. No lime greens, or reds, or blues. Build off the basics FIRST, before adding colour into your wardrobe.
Invest In High Quality / Long Lasting Pieces!
Another thing you’ll want to keep in mind is to not be afraid to invest in high quality pieces. Of course, keep in your budget & purchase items you actually like & scan see yourself wearing often. But investing in items that are higher quality will not only last longer, but will save you money in the long run from over purchasing. It’s a win win for you!
4 Key Items You’ll Need
To Create Your Capsule Wardrobe
Shoes
SHOES are of course an item we need on your feet. And if you’re not looking to be a Sneaker head, don’t worry - you don’t have to be! When searching for what shoes you need, then top three I suggest are:
- a pair of white sneakers
- black boots &
- a pair of black dress shoes.
Pants
Everyone needs PANTS. And you’d be surprised how long you can get by with only rocking these three styles. Though Denim is the pant everyone loves to hate, it’s typically society’s go-to pair. What’s great is jeans come in a multitude of washes, so you’re bound to find one you can stick to for years to come. I’d personally stick to a light-wash pair, or a dark-wash. Second, a good pair of khaki’s should also be in your rotation. It will certainly assist you for a more dressier look, but can also be worn casual. And lastly, a pair of smart pants. Now yes - these are essentially just dress pants, but they’re certainly something you’ll need for a more formal occasion.
Tops
Now, for TOPS, we’re going to get straight to the point. A white & black tee is something you will always wear, no matter what! You might not only wear a plain black or white t-shirt, but you WILL most certainly use them for LAYER!! And this is where a flannel or a hoodie come into play! Whether you wear the T-shirt underneath the flannel, or rock it with a hoodie, and can see it at the bottom of the hoodie - it’s definitely a great item to have! You’ll thank me later.
Outerwear
For OUTERWEAR, it can of course very on geography & climate you're surrounded by, but I’d say these two are a great foundation for everyone to have. A denim jacket is great because it can be worn in multiple ways, with tons of items I mentioned above! And it’s very easy for anyone to rock a denim jacket, no matter you’re personal style. And for a more formal, or semi casual wear, a wool blend coat is certainly a must-have! Now, depending on personal style, I’d say you could even get away with rocking a Peacoat instead of a wool blend, if you’re not a fan of the longer style. But these coats look great, whether you’re rocking it with an all sweats fit, or a suit!
BONUS
For a bonus edition, I had to include a suit! You’re certainly going to want to have a good suit in your collection, as something will come up where you’ll need. Now if you don’t think you’d be wearing this that often, I would say you don’t need to go all out & get the fanciest suit you can find. A minimal effort suit will suit you just fine, for that occasional suit event. But rather than panicking when that opportunity arises it’s best to have this on deck.
And there you have it! Those are my top 5 tips to building a capsule wardrobe, as well as sharing 4 key items you’ll need to invest in, to start that foundation. Now, my list is totally option! There’s many things you can shop instead of these items I mentioned below, or even build off of. But that’s what a capsule wardrobe is - the foundation of developing your personal style. Once you’ve started with a foundation, you can trickle in statement pieces, or trendy items, to mix with. This post is meant to inspire you & not tear down your current collection. If you enjoy what you currently own - fantastic! But if you’re looking to revamp you’re style, or have a hard time finding clothes to wear for certain events, having a capsule wardrobe would certainly be useful to you & help you out!
